MUTUAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN PLAYERS, PARENTS, AND COACHES
Expectations from players, parents and coaches
- Every player will show respect for their coaches as the ultimate decision-makers in practice and tournaments.
- Every player will listen and make efforts to follow guidelines and instruction provided by the coaches.
- Every coach will give his/her best effort to carry out his/her responsibilities to develop the volleyball skills and techniques of his/her players.
- Every coach will encourage and show respect for each player as a committed individual and team member.
- Every coach will have individual meetings with each player, at a minimum of twice per season, in order to evaluate and discuss the player’s performance. Coaches will offer constructive suggestions that will improve the player’s skills and techniques.
- Every parent will encourage and show respect to their daughter, other players, other parents, and coaches.
NAVC policy on playing time
- NAVC is dedicated to the development of competitive volleyball players and this requires the nurturing and enhancement of the competitive spirit and cooperation of the players and parents. While every player will have relatively equal practice time, it is the players who most help the team, at the coach’s discretion, who will get more playing time.
- Each player will get some minimum amount of playing time by: (1) being selected to play for a specific team; and (2) following the guidelines and rules of conduct for NAVC members.
- Play time is earned through hard work and dedication to improvement.
Guidelines for Conduct of NAVC Members—Players and Parents MUST Read
*Every player who commits to NAVC accepts a responsibility to herself, her teammates, and other club members to comply with the Mutual Agreement between Players, Parents, and Coaches. Every player must give her best efforts to the following guidelines:
- Treat all club members, parents, coaches, referees, and others in the volleyball community with respect;
- Help, encourage, and support her teammates in a positive way during good times and bad;
- Practice and play with intensity, focus, persistence, and determination in a self-disciplined season-long effort to become a better individual player and team player;
- Give a concentrated effort to meet her individual and team goals for the season;
- Conduct herself in a manner that reflects positively on herself, her teammates, her coaches, her parents, and NAVC.
*Every coach who joins NAVC accepts a responsibility and an obligation to comply with the Mutual Agreement between Players, Coaches, and Parents and the Southern Region Volleyball Association Code of Ethics.
*Every parent who joins NAVC accepts a responsibility and an obligation to comply with the Mutual Agreement between Players, Coaches, and Parents.
NAVC Rules of Conduct for Practice
All players must adhere to the following rules in order to receive playing time. Consequences will be assigned by the player’s coach for neglect of the following rules:
- Practice starts at the designated time unless otherwise notified by the coaching staff. If a player is going to miss practice, arrive late, or leave early, it is her responsibility to notify the coaching staff as early as possible prior to practice. Missed practices—notify at least 1 hour before designated practice time.
- Players are responsible for being fully prepared to practice. This means the following:
- Fully dressed—knee pads, socks, shoes, hair up, and practice clothes on when the coach begins practice
- Water bottle filled
- Cell phones OFF and in your bag
- Warm-ups must be worn to and from all practices.
- Practice is mandatory. Any missed practice may result in a reduction of tournament playing time. Players may only miss up to three practices that have not been “made up.” Players may “make up” a practice by practicing with another NAVC team, with both coaches consent, a maximum of twice a month. If the limit of three practices is exceeded players may be removed from the team or otherwise sanctioned as determined by the head coach.
- It is the responsibility of the players to set up nets and complete any other set up work necessary for a successful practice prior to the start of practice. Players are also responsible for the breakdown of the nets at the end of the practice. It is recommended that the players on each team work out a fair rotation schedule to complete this task. If players refuse to accept this responsibility, the coach will assign a rotation schedule that must be followed.
- Every player is responsible for cleaning up after herself at every practice.
- Players should be mentally and physically prepared for each practice and tournament.
- Players must comply with any safety rules designated by the coaches or facility.
- Players must report any sickness or injury to the coaching staff immediately upon detection.
- Injured players may not practice without a medical AND parental release.
- Overt displays of anger, frustration, disrespect, or lack of effort will NOT be tolerated. If repeated or excessive the player may be sanctioned, asked to leave practice, or be removed from the club at the discretion of the coach.
- NO sitting during practice except when warming up or given permission by the coaching staff.
- Players jog or run everywhere, except when given permission by the coaching staff.
- When shagging balls during a drill every player is to ensure that no balls roll into or through an active drill area to prevent any potential injuries.
- Players shag their own balls and do not ask another player or coach to shag their ball.
- All players should encourage their teammates in every drill.
- Every ball is everyone’s ball until played. There is no excuse for not going for a ball in the playing area. If you can make an attempt at the ball, make an attempt!
- Every player should call “mine” or “ball” immediately as she moves into position to play the ball.
- Every player should comply with the USA Volleyball Participant Code of Conduct.
NAVC Rules of Conduct for Tournaments
All players must adhere to the following rules in order to receive playing time. Consequences will be assigned by the player’s coach for neglect of the following rules:
- Injured players may not participate without a medical AND parental release.
- Players are responsible for being on time and fully prepared for every tournament. Fully prepared means the following:
- Fully dressed in uniform
- Kneepads, shoes, socks, and hair up upon arrival to facility
- Water bottles filled
- Cell phone OFF and in your bag
- Warm-ups must be worn to and from facility
- All players should offer encouragement and show support for their teammates, whether they are on the bench or on the court. All players should be mentally and physically prepared to enter the game at any time.
- Players and parents should always show respect for decisions made by the coaches during a tournament. If players or parents strongly disagree with a decision made by the coaches, the players or parents should wait to discuss the issue in a calm, constructive, and respectful manner after the match is completed. There are some instances when a discussion is not possible until after a tournament. It is up to the coach whether or not to address the issue immediately or at a later date.
- Players and parents should always show respect for opposing players and officials working a match. The designated floor captain is the only player allowed to respectfully question or discuss the decisions made by a referee with the referee.
- Every player is responsible for knowing how to keep score, line judge, and referee a match. Working assignments will be on a fair rotation determined by the coach or players.
- Players are responsible for all drinks, meals, and snacks during tournaments. They are also responsible for cleaning up any mess at the end of a tournament.
- Players may not leave a tournament site at any time without the expressed permission of the coaching staff. The player, not the parent, must notify the coach when they are leaving the court or the facility.
- No players may use alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs. Conduct that will bring embarrassment to the team or club while traveling or during a tournament is prohibited. Dismissal from the club may be a consequence of this behavior.
- Every player shall comply with the USA Volleyball Participant Code of Conduct.
NAVC Overnight Tournament Rules
All players must adhere to the following rules in order to receive playing time. Consequences will be assigned by the player’s coach for neglect of the following rules:
- Each player and parent is responsible for adhering to the NAVC Overnight Tournament Rules.
- Players must be in their room by 11 P.M. or other specific time set by the chaperone or coach.
- Players CANNOT leave the hotel without a parent or chaperone. Players, not parents, must notify either the chaperone or coach before leaving.
- Players must be in groups of two or more when leaving their room and at all times outside their room.
- NO visitors are allowed in the players’ room who are not members of the team or club.
- No more than four players will be assigned to a room, unless the need arises to add an additional player.
- The coach will designate a time and location for the team to meet in order to depart together for the tournament site. Players must be ready to leave at that time. This means packed for the day or packed to leave the hotel for check-out. It is the responsibility of the player to have breakfast before the designated departure time, unless otherwise specified by the coach (e.g. team breakfast).
- Teams must be accompanied by at least two adults—one of which must be a parent of a team member.
- All players and parents must comply with the NAVC Rules of Conduct for Tournaments listed above.
Consequences for Violations
Players who violate any of the practice or tournament rules may face the following consequences at the discretion of the coach and/or the Board of Directors:
- Additional exercises or conditioning
- Sitting out part of or an entire drill or practice
- Repeating a drill
- Loss of tournament playing time
- Early dismissal from a practice or tournament
- Suspension
- Dismissal from the team
Coaches and players of any team can mutually agree to additional consequences. The degree of the violation will determine the degree of the consequence. No player will be suspended or dismissed from a team without an opportunity to appeal and be heard by the Board of Directors.
A copy of this form will be distributed to the players and parents at the first team meeting. Parents and players must sign and return it to the head coach.
Coaches will be held to the following guidelines:
- Coaches will advise players of general safety rules to avoid injuries.
- Coaches will allow appropriate warm-up and stretching time at the beginning and end of every practice.
- Coaches will give regular water breaks during practice.
- Coaches will remain on premises until all players have departed from the facility (practice, tournament, and social sites).
